Heritage Action Supports Lee’s Labor Program Transparency Amendment

Today, the Senate will consider an amendment by Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) 100% to the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (H.R.803).  The amendment would require the Department of Labor (DOL) to publish the results of their impact evaluations on their website for the public to see.  It would also cut the pay of senior DOL officials if they ignore the requirement to conduct the evaluations.

The transparency and accountability provided by the Lee amendment are essential:  The Heritage Foundation’s David B. Muhlhausen, Ph.D. and James Sherk explain:

Federal job-training programs, as well as many other federal social programs, are seldom evaluated to determine whether they are actually accomplishing their intended purposes. As part of its obligation to spend taxpayers’ dollars wisely, Congress should expand the evaluation provisions in WIOA to include the job-training programs that have yet to be evaluated.

Americans deserve a transparent government that evaluates the effectiveness of taxpayer-funded programs.  Heritage Action supports the Lee amendment, which would help identify what works and what doesn’t.
