The Best of the Forge

Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu was on on Fox News’ ‘Your World with Neil Cavuto’ Tuesday where he made a very simple request of the Obama Administration: “simply enforce the laws.”

Cavouto explained that the economy is getting worse in Mexico, which means that more illegal immigrants will be attempting to come to the United States.  Babeu who has first hand experience with illegal immigrants agreed, and explained the phenomenon further:

Most illegal immigrants are coming to the United States in order for jobs, for health care, for education. And when things get worse in Mexico, we will have more illegals coming here.  Last year, we had 123,000 illegals that were apprehended, just here in this part of Arizona alone.  So if things get worse in Mexico, you’re going to see a measurable uptick in illegal immigrants coming into the United States.

Heritage Expert: End Ex-Im to Remove Wasteful Energy Subsidies

The Obama Administration is notorious for the economically harmful and burdensome regulations it has imposed across the U.S. economy.  Energy exports have not been spared.  But rather than removing regulatory barriers to energy exports, some Washington politicians want to subsidize them at taxpayers’ expense.

The Export-Import Bank has been a channel for these energy export subsidies, so much so that 30 percent of the Bank’s loans and guarantees in 2013 went to producers of energy technologies and equipment.

The Heritage Foundation’s Nick Loris argues that the Ex-Im Bank should be eliminated, because it exists to provide corporate welfare to politically connected companies.  It distorts markets and saddles taxpayers with risk.

Obamacare Update: May 1 — 28

This week, unions and employers are heatedly debating who will be on the hook for new Obamacare mandates, such as coverage for dependent children under the age of 26, as well as anticipated expenses like the premium health plan tax beginning in 2018. Tens of thousands of labor contracts will be expiring over the next few years and Obamacare costs will be a major factor in resulting disputes.

Seattle Times Loves Boeing, Export-Import Bank

“With billions at stake,” says the Seattle Times editorial board, “this state’s congressional Republicans, especially, now need to lead on the issue.”

This was the conclusion of a passionate defense of the Export-Import Bank, which the editorial board says is “of particular importance” to their state, “where about 40 percent of jobs are linked to international trade.”

The Bank’s charter is set to expire in September, which accounts for the editorial board’s sense of urgency.  The Seattle Times lauds the Bank for the loans and loan guarantees it gives foreign companies to purchase goods and services from U.S. exporters, and they note that “90 percent of Ex-Im transactions support firms typically too small for commercial Banks.”

Honoring Our Veterans on Memorial Day

The Heritage Foundation’s James Carafano, director of Heritage’s Allison Center for Foreign Policy Studies says this of Memorial Day:

We remember every member of every generation who gave their lives in service of their country.

Some were drafted. Some were volunteers. Some were brave beyond human understanding. Many were mere mortals who just wanted to serve and go home.
