No, Nancy Pelosi, Obamacare Is Not What the Founders Had In Mind

Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) 14% thinks Obamacare is a “dream come true” and that Obamacare is the reason people in America can now fully realize “the promise of our Founders of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.”

This comes from the same lady who said “we need to pass Obamacare to find out what’s in it.”  Heritage explains the true meaning of that infamous remark:

When Nancy Pelosi famously declared that we would have to pass the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (popularly known as“Obamacare”) so that we could find out what is in it, she was not referring to the length of the bill. Rather, she was referring to the fact that most of the laws—such as the infamous Health and Human Services (HHS) requirement that all insurance providers cover contraception, abortifacients, and sterilization—would be made by HHS, not found in the statute that Congress was passing.

It is extremely unlikely that the Founders had anything remotely close to Obamacare in mind when they were drafting the Constitution and setting up the government.

On the contrary, the Founders envisioned and set up a limited government, and it’s more likely they are rolling in their graves as they watch Obamacare unfold than rejoicing over it.  Obamacare is yet another expansion of the administrative state, where federal agencies and bureaucrats have an increasing amount of control of the intimate details of our daily decisions and lives.

Heritage explains:

Central to the idea of American constitutionalism are the concepts of representation, the rule of law, and the separation of powers. The administrative state does damage to all of these principles… [T]hese principles are violated by the administrative state.

We often think that the laws of this country are passed by Congress. Since Members of Congress are elected by the people, we assume that we have therefore indirectly consented to the laws that we must follow. The reality is much different. Most federal law is created by the agencies and departments that make up the national bureaucracy, not by Congress. Congress passes laws delegating its legislative power to these agencies and departments, and they in turn develop the laws with which we must comply.

Let’s be clear.  Obamacare is many things.

It’s an expansion of the administrative state and an assault on religious liberty. It’s destroying the economy. It’s making people lose their jobs, and forcing people into part-time rather than full-time work. It’s separating patients from their doctors and vice versa.

It’s anything but a “dream come true.”

More and more Americans are realizing this as they watch their premiums rise, like Tom Waschura, who will have to pay $10,000 more this year for his family’s insurance thanks to Obamacare.
