Schumer Buys GOP Support, Literally

While the farm bill’s defeat made immigration calculus more complicated in the House, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) reportedly found the fight formula in the Senate: cash money.  Politico reports:

The New York Democrat began to lose hope. Rather than deliver immigration reform with the 70-plus-vote show of force that Schumer had hyped so often, Democrats and the Gang of Eight would have to scratch and scrape their way to a filibuster-proof majority.

And yet, less than 24 hours later, they had a deal.

The answer to their problem turned out to be simple: Throw money at it.

In the end, just like in the heyday of earmarks, it was all about throwing money at GOP “priorities” to secure a few more votes.

It required a sweeping flip-flop from Gang of Eight members like Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) who opposed a separate amendment, saying, “It’s kind of odd: we think sequestration’s a good thing, but we’re gonna throw money at the border.  That’s a little schizophrenic.”  Graham’s skepticism evaporated when he realized he could buy off his fellow Republicans with a bunch of money.

The Gang of Eight’s amnesty bill was already about big government, and the mentality of those fawning over the amendment drafted by Sens. Robert Menendez (D-NJ) and Schumer and introduced by Sens. Bob Corker (R-TN) and John Hoeven (R-ND) confirms Washington’s addiction to spending is not yet over.

And thanks to Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL), we know this is nothing more than a fig leaf for amnesty.  He said the only reason Democrats are willing to support Schumer-Corker-Hoeven is because “it doesn’t stand in the way of citizenship.” It doesn’t stand in the way of amnesty, either.

Tell your Senators the so-called Schumer-Corker-Hoeven amendment is a fig leaf for amnesty and to oppose the Gang of Eight’s bill.
