Morning Action: The Internet Sales Tax Will Cause Harm

IST. Today at 11 a.m. ET, Heritage’s Google + Hangout will cover the topic of the internet sales tax.  Businessman and owner of Peace Frogs, Catesby Jones, will discuss in concrete terms how his business will be adversely affected by the internet sales tax:

“This is pure and simple a special interests bill,”Jones told the Daily Press in Hampton Roads, VA. “Let’s say I have to hire one or two people to handle the paperwork. That’s a huge percentage of my sales. This is going to be a huge barrier to entry for new businesses. They’re not going to be able to afford to deal with it. This is solely to benefit the large corporations.”

Of course, small businesses like Peace Frogs won’t be the only ones impacted. Consumers could soon be paying a whole lot more for products purchased online. The bill, which is anything but fair, would force retailers to act as tax collectors for states in which they have no voice. The tax hike on consumers could total billions of dollars annually.

SEQUESTER. Despite the sequester, politicians and bureaucrats have managed to find room to fund a Department of Defense green fuels program:

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel recently warned that sequestration would cause “suspension of important activities, curtailed training, and could result in furloughs of civilian personnel” but the spending cuts haven’t killed the green fuels program, as the Pentagon has continued purchasing renewable fuel at $59 per gallon.

GUNS.  It comes as no surprise that the left is still adamant about passing a gun control measure, and President Obama is particularly intent upon it.  Vice President Joe Biden’s master plan is to make gun-control sales pitches all around the country.  It will be interesting to hear what he has to say.

The problem, of course, is that once you remove the rhetoric, you’re left with leftist proposals that would protect no one and undermine the Constitutional rights of law-abiding citizens:

President Obama vowed Thursday during a press conference in Mexico City that the White House would continue pushing for an expansion of background checks to cover firearms purchases online and at gun shows.

“Things happen somewhat slowly in Washington. But this was just the first round,” Obama said. “I believe we’ll eventually get that done. We’ll keep on trying.”

IMMIGRATION.  The Heritage Foundation produced an excellent infographic to depict what’s wrong with the Gang of Eight’s immigration bill.  It’s a must see and must share.
