The Best of the Forge

1. Shop China.  According to Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR), “the way this bill is going to work, people are going to end up calling it the shop Canada bill or maybe the shop Mexico bill or, what is even more ominous, the shop China bill.”

2. Taxation without Representation.  As Heritage President Jim DeMint explains, the internet sales tax “violates the classic American principle of ‘no taxation without representation.’  Retailers would be forced to act as tax collectors for states in which they have no voice.”

5 More Reasons the Gang of Eight’s Immigration Bill is a Bad Idea

Last week, Heritage Action shared 5 simple signs that the Senate immigration bill was bad news. Here are five more reasons this is an unworkable and undesirable solution to America’s broken immigration system.

1. It undermines the rule of law.

America is based squarely on the rule of law. The opportunity people seek when they come to this country is predicated on the rule of law.   Why would any law-abiding American embrace a bill that tells 11 million people that they should be rewarded for coming here unlawfully?  It’s amnesty, and it is wrong.

The Very Real, Very Massive Cost of Amnesty

Proponents of the Gang of Eight’s immigration bill deny that illegal immigrants given legal status will be eligible for Obamacare and other entitlements.  Unfortunately for taxpayers, that’s not what the text of the legislation states.  Betsy McCaughey, former lieutenant governor of New York, gave those “outrageously untrue” claims a solid thrashing because she actually read the bill.

Obamacare’s Failures Reveal Split on the Right

In 2009, conservatives and Republicans stood united in their belief that Obamacare was bad medicine. As bureaucrats in Washington attempt to implement the so-called Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, those concerns are becoming reality. However, the harsh reality of Obamacare combined with President Obama’s reelection is exposing cracks in the opposition to Obamacare.

Earlier tonight, the House Rules Committee adopted a rule for H.R.1549, the Helping Sick Americans Now Act. The bill, as drafted, would transfer $4 billion from Obamacare’s Prevention and Public Health Fund (a slush fund that should be zeroed out immediately) to reopen the failed federal high-risk pool created by Obamacare.

Raising Your Taxes is Easier than Checking the Weather!

Today on the Senate floor, Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-TN) claimed that taxing consumers for online purchases is as easy as finding out the weather.  He made those comments in a defense of the so-called Marketplace Fairness Act of 2013, which Heritage Action opposes.  He states that an internet company can find out the tax for any jurisdiction as easily as they could find out the weather just by knowing someone’s zip code.
