Morning Action: Happy President’s Day

Every morning, Heritage Action’s Morning Action will cut through the clutter to bring conservative activists the most relevant news involving Congress.  We’ll tell you what’s happening on the Hill, who is saying what, and, most importantly, what you can do about it!

GUNS.  The left is doing more than playing politics with the Second Amendment; their policies are obliterating it.  FoxNews reports one firearms manufacturer will ends sales to New York in wake of  the state’s new gun law:

New York Gov. Cuomo last month signed into law tough legislation aimed at strengthening state laws on assault weapons, gun-magazine capacity and reporting potential harmful behavior. Though the law allows law enforcement agencies to purchase assault-style weapons, Olympic says it will no longer serve the state’s first responders.

“It didn’t make sense that citizens can’t have what police departments have,” Brian Schuetz, Olympic’s president and co-owner, told the Times Union.

HAGEL.  Chuck Hagel does not deserve to be the next Secretary of Defense, but the Wall Street Journal (sub. req’d) reports Senator John McCain (R-AZ) is “confident” Hagel will be confirmed:

“Mr. McCain will oppose Mr. Hagel’s confirmation, but doesn’t expect to delay the process further, he said.

“New White House Chief of Staff Denis McDonough said he had spoken to Mr. McCain recently and sensed discomfort among Republicans over the perception they are blocking a defense secretary from taking office.”

SEQUESTER. Delaying or eliminating the sequester is not an option.  Despite all the White House rhetoric, the economic impact is over blown, and now the Associate Press is reporting the same: “‘Sequester’ warnings may be harsher than actual budget cuts.

Past administrations have seldom hesitated to spotlight how budget standoffs would wilt programs the public values.

When a budget fight between President Bill Clinton and congressional Republicans led to two government shutdowns, in 1995 and 1996, some threats came true, like padlocked national parks.

Others did not.
