Our Underfunded Military

Heritage Action’s CEO Mike Needham and Loyal Opposition Co-chair Jennifer Stefano have written an article for the Philadelphia Inquirer about the state of our military and its funding. Unfortunately, our military and the Pentagon have been the favorite whipping boy for Congress – having their budget cut by $350 billion dollars in the first round of debt limit offsets and being threatened with another $600 billion in cuts if the Super Committee fails.

From the article:

“Intent on using our already stressed and underfunded military as a cash cow for budget savings, Washington politicians are playing a dangerous game with America’s safety. If the new congressional super- committee does not identify $1.2 trillion in deficit reductions, America’s security operations – primarily defense – will be cut by roughly $600 billion over the next 10 years.

“There is the very real risk its actions will break our military, turning America into a second-class military power. Failure to appropriate funds to reverse this decline will only embolden U.S. adversaries, who know that history has seen more than one great military power (e.g., Spain, Portugal, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom) become a mere shadow of its former self.

“Every American should be outraged. Conservatives must remain unrelenting in demanding our common defense – as laid out in the Constitution – be fully provided for. Members of the tea party and other grassroots movements must fight the defunding of defense. To lose our military standing in the world would put our very liberty at risk.”
