Driving the Day: Debt Ceiling Jockeying Begins
Yesterday, the media dutifully pointed out that President Obama’s position on the debt ceiling was evolving (or perhaps hypocritical). As a Senator, Mr. Obama voted against increasing the debt ceiling because it would have been irresponsible to continue to the status quo. He was right then, but now, as President, Mr. Obama wants to raise the debt ceiling with no strings attached.
Or so we thought.
According to the Wall Street Journal, President Obama has left the door open to attaching serious reforms to any increase. Interestingly, that appears to be directly at odds with what White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said yesterday, that it was “too dangerous” to “hold hostage a vote.”
Now, conservatives must run through that open door before the President changes his mind. Conservatives must attach serious reforms, serious cuts and serious procedural changes to the debt ceiling. No more blank checks!
