Driving the Week: Deal on Taxes

Dozens of news organizations are reporting that a deal is imminent on taxes.  While the details are still be fleshed out, it seems as though a two-year extension and an extension of unemployment benefits could be coupled together.

More: see what could happen this week on START, government spending, and more…

START. The Sunday shows were interesting.  Senator Lugar (R-IN) claimed he had the votes.  Senator Durbin (D-IL) took a backhanded swipe at Majority Leader Reid’s (D-NV) floor management.  Senator Kyl (R-AZ) laid out some serious concerns with the treaty.  And Senator McConnell (R-KY) left the door open to START.

Funding the Government. The WSJ is reporting that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi wants to fund the government for the remainder of the fiscal year.  A yearlong funding measure would make it more difficult for newly empowered Republicans to cut spending next year.

Everything Else. House Republicans are expected to announce who will chair key committees.  In the Senate, there will be an impeachment trial of a federal judge and a series of hyper-partisan votes on issues like the DREAM Act and a collective bargaining bill long favored by unions.
